Glass block windows have long been used in homes to bring in natural light and a feeling of openness to rooms yet maintain privacy by preventing others from seeing clearly through them. Use glass blocks to build a privacy screen, install a privacy window, or instill a touch of art deco-style into your home.
Types of Glass Block Widows
Newer designs, patterns, colors, and clear, less cloudy looks have modernized glass block windows. Types of glass block windows include:
- Clear:Â This glass is pattern-free and offers a little privacy while transmitting the most light.
- Patterned:Â Classic and abstract patterns and textures, such as wavy, ribbed, diamond, and geometrics, offer privacy, buffering the shapes seen from the outside.
- Fire-rated:Â This glass block slows fire spread and can withstand high temperatures.
- Vented: A small, customized hinged built-in window can be opened for airflow.
- Frameless:Â Glass block without a frame is a classic look.
- Framed:Â Some glass block styles can be installed with vinyl framing.
Glass Block Installation
A regular window can often be replaced with a glass block window or a pre-fabricated kit. Do not use regular brick mortar for this material. Use a premixed glass block mortar and seal it with silicone caulk. Regular brick mortar cannot be used because it has high water content, which is pulled into the porous brick. Glass is not porous, so it cannot pull the water away. For that reason, glass block mortar is drier than brick mortar.
Maintenance and Durability
Glass block windows will last up to 30 years with very little maintenance. Wash them as you normally do other windows and use a power wash outside for extra cleaning.
Repair any chipped glass block mortar to keep the window stable. Resealing mortar should be done every two years to keep the window in great shape.
